Wizard apprentice of Law !

WOW ! I've rarely managed to do that but I actually DID finish a model from the bginning to the end in one single session !
I've been thinking about what model to use as an apprentice for my champions of Law in games of Mordheim lately and no model seemed to fit. Then I remembered I had got this Imperial wizard for 1€ amongst other models in a trade (couldn't miss such a model for that price really !) and thought he'd be perfect !

The model was (very poorly if you look at the mouldline running acorss his left arm) prepared and primed so that yesterday night, all I had to do was sit and paint !

Since I had almost forgotten how I had painted the previous models, I got back to my tutorial and started painting following it. In about 2 hours, the model was done and I just had to add a couple of minutes to tidy the base and blackline a few bits here and there to call it done.

The painting was fun and easy as on most of these old models and the writings on the scroll were already carved into the model so I just had to follow the lines. ^^

It's of course no award wining paint job here but I'm satisfied to have completed it in 2 hours (a record for me) and to have kept the stamina to paint tha long without a break (I usually pause every 30 minutes to model something or change miniature otherwise).

I think the model fits well amongst the others even if it's very small in comparison, he looks like a bearded child ! I'm not too fussed about it though and at least I have models that really represent what the models are (least of courtesy towards the other players).

I'm soon going to develop how I plan my Frostgrave force and I'll write my views in our group blog Scale Creep along my fellow Wipster friends taking part in Knavecon in April.

I have many things to prepare for the event still, including a couple of models for a Rogue Trader game, tokens for the Frostgrave game and a couple of models for a little warm-up game I'll develop a bit later (I'm such a tease...).

Just to make you wait a little, have a look at what's coming ;)

  1. Very nice JB. I find it really interesting that you rarely paint one figure start-finish in one sitting - I ALWAYS do that!

This new guy is a nice addition. He is tiny, but perhaps in time he will learn how to magic up his own whirlwind in place of legs :)

    1. I really love the common points between teh 2 and I like to imagine teh apprentic as a younger version of the Warlock really !
Army painting has got me into a firm believer of painting Taylorism but recently I've learnt to approach things a slightly more relaxed way. The champions of Law areca ctually the first project for which I painted the models one by one (except 3).
I still do paint units and still find time saving to work on many models from multiple projects at a time (reds on all models, then metallics on all...), really depends on my mood.

  2. He looks great dude - fits right in, and I like that he's so dinky! Certainly doesn't look like a 2 hour paint job to me :-)

    1. Cheers mate, the photos erase the brush strokes a little but it's rough work really, didn't feel like teh model needed much more to be honest, very little detail on this one.

  3. He looks good. Wizards don't have to be giants: it's not all about physical strenght for them. Love the last photo - very atmospheric.

    1. Wits over brute force right ? Why would they become wizards otherwise ? ^^

I owe the last pic to my good friend Colin, more of these in a coming post ;)

  4. Nicely done JB. He fits in well with his master. Good going on the time front too; my painting procedures are littered with breaks as well so know how rewarding it is to plough through charged with stamina on odd occasions.

    1. Cheers Ed, I must have felt some remorse for not painting anything this past week (spent all my hobby time playing with putty and saw) so I had to get back into the swing of things. Some projects are takiing quite a toll on us but you know that. ;)

    2. Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees or the milliput for the brush. A wise man said to me it's important not to rush projects. ;)

  7. He looks like Merlin from Excalibur! ^^

Also quite funny that the runes you made on this warband are shaped a bit like Eldar runes, or am i the only one feeling that way ?

    1. The old bearded wizard archetype never gets old does it ? ;)
I just followed the details carved in to the sculpt but it's true a couple of them look like eldar runes. They must have picked in the same sources for both I reckon.

  8. Nice glowing eyes on him JB. Oh, and as a few others have already mentioned, that last photo's the bomb! How'd you get an electrical arc to eminate from his finger tip without his hand melting off? Amazing!

    1. Cheers dude !
The electric arc is easy, it's just wire, green stuff and... nah OK, it's a stupid Iphone app called LensFX and my mate Colin kindly did a few scenic shots for me. Plenty more in a coming post ;)

I'm starting to think about another Champions of Law warband focusing on another god of Law (once I've decided which one those above are about). Could be fun !

  11. 2 hours to finish is a good result. Takes me 4 at least if I'm putting in the effort.

Good fig though and I like that he's shorter than the other warband members. Prolly has napoleon syndrome and orders them about in a screechy shrill voice!

    1. 2 hours is a good time for a simple model like this one, anything more complicated would require 2 sessions really.
For a model I only got because it was cheap I'm quite happy, it finally proved very useful !
We'll see how it fares in coming games ;)

  12. Nice work, andI am envious that you have done so well in such a short time span, as I seem to labour over my own paint jobs for not the best result.

    1. The balance is always tricky, the week and a half before this, I just couldn't get myself to take a brush and only drilled, cut and filled gaps ^^
      Thanks a lot ;)

  14. You captured the essence of an apprentice of Law enthusiastically wielding his health and safety regulations document perfectly JB. And in two hours? Wow.

I like that the guy is a little on the short side. People come in a lot of diffent shapes and sizes and as the style of the sculpt is very similar he fits in perfectly.

A really brilliant addition, I cant wait to see it in hand :)
